Should You Wear SPF Every Day?
If there’s one skincare step you should never skip, it’s sunscreen. While serums and moisturisers can boost hydration or smooth fine lines, daily SPF is the real powerhouse for healthy, youthful skin. Yet, many people still think sunscreen is only for the beach on holiday, or only on sunny days. The truth? UV damage happens every single day, indoors, outdoors, rain or shine.
In this article, we’ll cover why SPF is so important, debunk common sunscreen myths, and show you how to choose and apply the best daily sunscreen for your skin.
What Is SPF and Why Does It Matter?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It measures how well a sunscreen protects your skin from UVB rays, the kind that cause sunburn. But protection isn’t just about SPF numbers.
UVA rays are longer waves from the sun and can penetrate deeper into the skin, causing premature ageing and changes to the skin cells which can lead to more serious skin concerns. To get protection from both UVA and UVB rays you should always look for a broad-spectrum SPF.
Top Reasons to Wear SPF Every Day
1. Prevents Premature Ageing
Up to 90% of visible skin ageing is caused by UV exposure. Daily SPF helps prevent wrinkles, fine lines, sagging, and loss of elasticity by protecting collagen and elastin. It’s well known in the beauty industry that wearing daily SPF on your face is a huge factor in promoting youthful and healthy skin.
2. Protects Against Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, and UV radiation is the leading cause. And don’t forget those UVA are present all year round, so wearing SPF every day significantly reduces your lifetime risk.
3. Reduces Hyperpigmentation & Dark Spots
Sun exposure worsens dark spots, melasma, and post-acne marks. Consistent use of sunscreen helps even out skin tone and keeps pigmentation under control. You can even find anti-pigmentation SPFs which have skincare ingredients to help combat dark spots and pigmentation!
4. Shields Skin Indoors & on Cloudy Days
Did you know UVA rays penetrate through clouds and glass? That means your skin is still exposed while driving, sitting by a window, or working in a bright office. Daily SPF provides invisible protection against this hidden damage, and your skin will thank you later for it.
5. Complements Active Ingredients
Retinol, vitamin C, and exfoliating acids can make skin more sensitive to the sun. Without SPF, you may undo all the benefits of your skincare routine and sunscreen locks in those results by preventing further UV damage.
Common Myths About Daily Sunscreen Use:
-
“I don’t need sunscreen indoors.”
UVA rays penetrate windows, so protection is still essential and even blue light from digital devices can lead to premature ageing, pigmentation and weakening the skin barrier. -
“Dark skin tones don’t need SPF.”
While deeper skin tones have more natural melanin, they are still at risk of hyperpigmentation and skin cancer. SPF is vital for everyone. -
“Makeup with SPF is enough.”
You’d need an unrealistic amount of foundation to reach the protection level on the label. And we doubt you’re using that much on your skin! It’s always best use a dedicated sunscreen underneath. -
“You only need SPF in summer.”
UV rays are present year-round, even in winter and on cloudy days, they don’t take a break!
How to Choose the Best Daily SPF
Throughout our 30 years as a sun protection brand, we’d always recommend a face SPF which is SPF30 or higher. This is completely dependent on your environment and how exposed your skin is to the sun, for example while on holiday and exposed to higher temperatures, a SPF50 would be best for this. For day to day working in an office or spending time at home, a SPF30 would be sufficient protection for your skin.
Another thing to look for is broad-spectrum protection, as this covers you against both UVA and UVB rays. Our SPFs also protect against blue light/HEVL from digital devices and Infrared-A which can also cause premature ageing and other skin concerns.
Our top recommendations for daily facial SPF
Of course we have a couple of recommendations! Depending on your skin type and what you’re looking for your SPF to do beyond protecting your skin, so let’s get into it.
For our dry or combination skin types who love a cream texture, our Face SPF50+ is a great option. It’s lightweight enough for your daily moisturiser, provides the broad-spectrum protection we’re looking for and has added antioxidant Ectoin®️. This clever ingredient is scientifically proven to prevent UVA-induced premature photo-ageing of the skin.
For something lightweight and more serum-like in texture, our Photo Age Control Fluid glides onto the skin and protects and hydrates in one. Again, with Ecotin®️ to prevent skin ageing from the harmful sun rays, it leaves your skin soft, smooth and radiant.
A great way to streamline your skincare routine in the morning, is with a tinted SPF! Our Face Fluid Tinted SPF50+ delivers on that high protection, while in an easy-to-apply formula and universal shade to suit many. It’s the fusion of ingredients to hydrate and safeguard against future damage, and easy daily wear that makes it a customer favourite.
Sunscreen is more than just a summer essential; it’s a year-round skincare must. Wearing SPF every day helps prevent premature ageing, reduces pigmentation, lowers your risk of skin cancer, and protects your results from active ingredients.
If you want healthy, glowing skin for years to come, the answer is simple: make SPF a non-negotiable part of your daily routine.
