The Essential SPF Guide For Winter
Think once the summer is over it’s time to ditch your SPF? Think again! Sunscreen isn’t just for summer, it’s a year-round essential. Even in the coldest months, UV rays are still present and able to reach your skin. So let’s break it down and share why SPF is still essential in the winter season.
Why SPF matters all year round
We know that our sunscreen protects us from UV rays, which are always present, even when the sun isn’t shining. The two main types are:
- UVA. These are longer waves which penetrate deeply into the skin, leading to premature ageing, fine lines and more serious skin concerns. UVA is around all year and can pass through clouds and glass to reach your skin.
- UVB. These are the rays responsible for sunburn, so even though the UVB intensity drops in the winter, they don’t leave completely.
A surprising fact is that if you live somewhere with snow cover, the snow reflects up to 80% of UV rays, meaning exposed areas such as your face can get hit directly and indirectly. Wonder why those doing snow sports often end up with burnt noses and cheeks?
The benefits of wearing SPF in the winter
- Prevents premature ageing. Wearing daily sun protection is one of the only factors which will help fight off signs of ageing, fine lines and pigmentation, which is why it’s important to start wearing it early!
- Protects against serious skin concerns. Consistent sunscreen use reduces long-term skin cancer risks.
- Maintains an even complexion. Not wearing enough sunscreen over the summer could’ve led to more pigmentation, so continue your SPF journey to help prevent them from worsening.
- Support skin barrier health. The colder season can weaken our skin barrier in any case, so keeping on top of daily SPF adds an extra layer of defence.
How to choose the best SPF for the winter
At Ultrasun we have a variety to choose from, segmented by texture and targeted function.
Our original formulas:
Face SPF50+ and SPF30, plus tinted and anti-pigmentation versions. These are great all-rounders for high broad-spectrum protection against UVA, UVB, infra-red and blue light rays. Each has added skincare benefits so work as your daily moisturiser and primer, as well as your SPF!
Our Face Fluid SPF50+ formulas:
Anti-Pigmentation, Anti-Pollution and tinted versions. These are our lightest formulas yet, almost milk-like and absorb effortlessly into the skin. Our Anti-Pigmentation formula won an award at the Universal Beauty Awards in 2025 and has amazing results for reducing the appearance of pigmentation.
Our Photo Age Control Fluid formulas:
SPF30 or SPF50. Another super light SPF which we’d describe as a serum-texture. It has a precise nozzle for easy application and helps prevent premature ageing with broad-spectrum protection. A great option for those more on the oily or blemish-prone side!
As always, remember to apply your SPF each morning and if you’re in warmer or areas exposed to more UV rays, then top-up during the day. Keep our handy Lip Protection SPF50 with you and don’t forget your hands too! Our Hand Cream SPF30 is a favourite for reducing the appearance of age spots and keeping hands well moisturised.
So do you need SPF in the winter? The answer is a 100% yes. UV rays don’t take a holiday, and neither should your sunscreen. By making SPF a non-negotiable part of your winter skincare routine, you’ll protect your skin from premature aging, sun damage, and long-term risks, all while keeping your complexion healthy and radiant.
