Product FAQs
How should I apply Ultrasun products, and how often?
Apply Ultrasun products generously to clean, dry
skin at least 15–30 minutes before sun exposure. Ensure even coverage,
including easy-to-miss areas like shoulder straps or around clothing edges.
Application indoors and before sun exposure
is key. Applying in direct sunlight reduces effectiveness due to premature
evaporation. Ultrasun’s lamellar technology allows quick absorption and
optimal skin compatibility, delivering high-performance, non-greasy protection
that binds to the skin’s outer layer.
Thanks to Ultrasun’s long-lasting formulas, one
application per day is typically sufficient. However, reapplication is
advised after swimming, excessive sweating, towel drying, or in extreme heat.
Always follow product-specific directions, stay hydrated, and avoid sun
exposure between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
How much sunscreen should I use?
Follow the 2mg/cm² guideline from the European Cosmetic Industry, roughly equivalent to:
- 1 teaspoon per limb (arms, legs)
- 1 teaspoon for the front, back, and face (including neck and ears)
For a 1-week holiday:
- Children: 100ml
- Adults: 150ml
Can I use other skincare products before Ultrasun?
No. Ultrasun should be applied first, to clean, dry skin. This ensures it binds properly to your skin and offers maximum protection. Products containing oils or silicones applied beforehand may reduce efficacy.
Why use broad spectrum protection daily, even when it's cloudy?
UVA rays are present all year, penetrate glass and clouds, and accelerate skin ageing. Think UVA = Ageing.
Ultrasun’s daily facial products offer high UVA
& UVB protection, and are formulated with additional benefits like anti-pollution,
anti-ageing, and skin-brightening properties—making them ideal daily skincare essentials, often replacing BB or CC creams.
I get prickly heat, what should I use?
Try Ultrasun Family SPF30 or Ultrasun Extreme SPF50+, both dermatologist recommended for sun allergies and prickly heat. Wear loose clothing and avoid products with mineral oils or silicones that may block pores.
What’s the best product for babies?
Babies under 6 months should not be exposed to the sun. If sun exposure is unavoidable, use Ultrasun Extreme SPF50+, and protect them with:
- Long-sleeved clothing
- Wide-brimmed hats or bonnets
- A stroller canopy or hood
Does Ultrasun block Vitamin D production?
No. Ultrasun filters don’t block Vitamin D production. Your skin can still produce Vitamin D while protected, just at a slower rate. According to the British Association of Dermatologists, prolonged sun exposure does not increase Vitamin D levels beyond a certain point. Consult your GP for dietary or supplement advice if you're concerned.
Which SPF is right for me?
Choose SPF based on:
• Your skin type
• UV index
• Duration of exposure
If your skin is not acclimatised to the sun, use higher protection (SPF 50/50+) for the first 10–20 days.
Tip: SPF 50+ provides stronger protection than SPF 50, as it must exceed SPF 60 in EU testing.
How long do Ultrasun products last once opened?
Most Ultrasun products have a 2-year shelf life after opening. Look for the PAO (Period After Opening) symbol on packaging.
Are Ultrasun products vegan?
Yes, all Ultrasun products are vegan, except our Lip Protection and Sun Stick, which contain beeswax.
What are UVA, UVB, Infrared-A, and HEVL?
• UVA: Deep skin penetration, causes ageing and long-term damage
• UVB: Surface burns, measured by SPF
• Infrared-A (IRA): Penetrates skin layers, contributes to free radical formation
• HEVL (Blue Light): Causes oxidative stress and hyperpigmentation
Ultrasun products are formulated to protect against all four with antioxidants and advanced filters.
Is Ultrasun cruelty-free?
Absolutely. Ultrasun is 100% cruelty-free, and we comply with all EU and international regulations prohibiting animal testing.
Can I use Ultrasun while pregnant?
Yes. Ultrasun products are safe during pregnancy. Consider using higher SPF as hormonal changes may increase pigmentation risk, such as melasma.
What does “photostable” mean?
Photostability ensures a product’s UV filters remain effective under sun exposure. All Ultrasun formulas are photostable and maintain their protective efficacy throughout the day.
Is Ultrasun reef-friendly and ocean safe?
Yes. Ultrasun is the first sun protection brand globally awarded the BASF EcoSun Pass for environmental safety. We’re free from reef-harming filters and safe for use in areas like Hawaii and Palau. Find out more here
What is the “UVA star rating” system?
The star rating system is UK-specific. Instead, Ultrasun uses the EU-recommended UVA circle logo, meaning UVA protection is at least 1/3 of the SPF. Ultrasun goes further, providing over 85% UVA protection across all formulations.
Does Ultrasun usenano-particles?
Yes, but safely. Ultrasun uses nano Titanium Dioxide and non-nano Zinc Oxide. Our chosen particle sizes are safe, do not penetrate the bloodstream, and are optimised for both performance and skin feel—non-sticky, residue-free, and effective.
Is SPF in makeup or moisturisers enough?
Often not. Most cosmetics with SPF:
• Are applied too thinly
• Lack UVA protection
• Are not water-resistant
Ultrasun’s facial sunscreens are broad spectrum, photostable, and SPF30 or higher, making them ideal as a base layer under makeup.
Can I use Ultrasun under makeup?
Yes. Ultrasun facial products are designed to be lightweight, non-greasy, and fast-absorbing, making them the perfect primer under makeup.
Can I reapply SPF over makeup?
Yes. Use Ultrasun Face & Scalp Mist SPF50—a weightless, invisible spray that allows for easy top-up without disturbing makeup.
Is Ultrasun packaging recyclable?
Yes. Our packaging is widely recyclable. Please check your local recycling guidelines or use local collection centres.
Is Ultrasun suitable for acne-prone skin?
Yes. Ultrasun products are non-comedogenic, free from oils and emulsifiers that could block pores, making them suitable for sensitive and acne-prone skin.
Can I use Ultrasun on tattoos?
Yes. We recommend using Ultrasun Extreme SPF50+ to protect tattooed skin from fading or discolouration due to UV exposure.
Does Ultrasun tan the skin?
Yes. Ultrasun allows for a gradual, healthy tan while protecting from damage. It filters UV rather than blocking it entirely, so melanin development still occurs—just more safely.
Is Ultrasun safe for sensitive or eczema-prone skin?
Yes. Ultrasun is dermatologist-recommended for sensitive skin types, including those prone to eczema, rosacea, allergies, and prickly heat. Free from common irritants like fragrance, mineral oils, emulsifiers, and preservatives, many formulas are suitable for medically sensitive skin.
Can I use Ultrasun if I have melasma or hyperpigmentation?
Yes. Sun exposure is a major trigger for melasma and dark spots. Use a high UVA + UVB product, such as Ultrasun Anti-Pigmentation SPF50+. It contains encapsulated lamellar technology and brightening ingredients like ectoin and hexylresorcinol to help prevent and reduce discolouration.
Does Ultrasun prevent sunburn on the scalp or hair parting?
Yes. Use Ultrasun Face & Scalp Mist SPF50—a non-greasy, invisible spray ideal for exposed areas like the scalp, ears, hairline, and partings. Perfect for use on thinning hair or bald spots too.
Can Ultrasun be used during sports or water activities?
Yes. Ultrasun is ideal for active lifestyles. Its formulas are water-resistant, sweat-resistant, and fast-absorbing, without leaving a sticky or greasy film—making it ideal for runners, cyclists, swimmers, and outdoor enthusiasts. If you are perspiring excessively or going in and out of the pool we recommend topping up.
What’s the difference between chemical and mineral (physical) filters—and which does Ultrasun use?
• Chemical filters absorb UV rays and convert them into heat.
• Mineral filters (e.g. titanium dioxide, zinc oxide) reflect and scatter UV rays.
Ultrasun offers both:
• Mineral-only options: e.g. Ultrasun Mineral SPF50
• Hybrid options: combining both for maximum broad-spectrum coverage and skin compatibility
All filters used are photostable and safe for skin and environment.
Is Ultrasun safe for use on lips and around the eyes?
Yes. For lips, use Ultrasun Lip Protection SPF30, enriched with nourishing ingredients and beeswax. For eyes, Ultrasun formulas are fragrance-free and will not sting or run into the eyes when applied correctly.
