Ectoin surrounds itself, other proteins and cell membranes in a coat of stabilising water to protect from allergens and pollutants, reducing irritation.  It prevents the release of stress mediators which trigger inflammation and the mutation of cells caused by UV rays.  This helps to calm redness, irritation and soothe sensitivity.
