Ultrasun celebrates 30 years 🥳

Where were you in 1992? Ultrasun was watching its first broad spectrum formula leave the lab, yes…we’re turning 30!

As we celebrate our special anniversary, let’s look through the decades with some interesting SPF facts to discover how far we’ve come and where we’re going.

The association between UV rays and skin cancer is thought to have first been noted in the 1920s. Some have credited Coco Chanel with making tanning chic in the 1930s although this stemmed apparently, from a sunburn incident on a cruise to Cannes in 1923.

During the 1960s, tanning became fashionable but unfortunately, actual protection did not and studies linking sun exposure to skin cancer became more frequent.

As we welcomed in the 80’s the shift towards protection and education begins. Australia launched it’s ‘Slip Slop Slap’ campaign in 1981, and the “Are you dying to get a sun-tan”, educational poster from UK’s Health Education Authority launched in 1988.

The 1990s saw progress in awareness and Baz Luhrmann’s song ‘Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen’ became a modern-day mantra.  However, it was clear that there was still some way to go…

In 1992 Tazio Tettamanti developed and launched the first Ultrasun formulation. Sports SPF20 a long-lasting stable UVA and UVB sun protection gel.  Ultrasun was and still is the only SPF brand to formulate with lamellar structures – encapsulating very high UVB and UVA filters. Lamellar formulas allow for absorption just below the skin’s surface for longer protection and non-greasy textures.

Following a family holiday in 1997, Abi Cleeve, who heads up Ultrasun in the UK met Tazio and was blown away by his passion and ability. She went to Switzerland and her education in sun and skin began as she opened Ultrasun UK.

As the beauty world become aware of the damage UVA can do to collagen and elastin production, the World Health Organisation advised UVA rays present in light are responsible for 90% of the signs of premature ageing on the skin.

In 2007 Ultrasun’s first face formula launched, delivering very high protection with innovative skincare active Ectoin, in the same year it became licensed for cosmetic use.

In 2010 EU law changed making it mandatory to include UVA protection in all EU sun care. All Ultrasun formulas delivered a UVA filter of over 85% against the EU minimum of 33%.

Face Anti-Pigmentation SPF50+ launched in 2014 and quickly became a multiple award-winner and best-seller as it visibly targeted existing pigmentation. Ultrasun was recognised as a vital addition to skincare routines with clinical premium actives delivered in lightweight and comfortable textures, without residue.

In 2019 Ultrasun partnered with the Black Skin Directory for the UK’s first Ad campaign to feature a black model, accompanying a UV education report to raise awareness of the need for protection for all skin types.

With a commitment to protect the environment as well as our skin, Ultrasun became and remains the only SPF brand to achieve BASF Eco Sun Pass status in 2020. This 360° accreditation goes way beyond just ‘reef Friendly’.

In 2021 Ultrasun’s UV Mist SPF50+ launched with recommendation in two major book releases dedicated to skin: ‘Skincare’ by Caroline Hirons & ‘Black Skin’ by Dija Ayedole.

As we celebrate our 30th anniversary, it’s a good time to ask, “Where are we now?”  We’re more aware of the health and skin damage dangers of UVB and UVA rays, incorporating UV protection into our skincare routines more widely. Our aim is to continue to listen so we can develop formulas with innovation which ensure everyone has access to SPF as a daily staple 365 days a year.

To celebrate this milestone we have a different offer every week in May, starting with 30% off and FREE delivery on our number 1 best-selling Face SPF30. In Limited Edition packaging it’s the perfect excuse to try it and see why it’s so loved or stock up on your favourite! SHOP HERE
