Your Winter SPF Questions Answered

Do I need to wear sunscreen in the winter?

Yes, you should wear sunscreen during winter months.  Whilst the intensity of UVB rays which cause sunburn may be lower at this time of year, UVA rays responsible for aging and skin damage are still present year-round, impacting cumulatively beneath the skin’s surface.

Can I skip sunscreen on cloudy winter days?

No, you shouldn't skip sunscreen on cloudy days. UVA rays can penetrate through clouds and glass which may cause skin damage and premature aging, even when the sun isn't shining brightly or during lower temperatures.

What is UV damage?

According to the World Health Organisation, up to 90% of the visible changes commonly attributed to ageing may be caused by sun exposure. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skins layers where they disrupt the production of collagen and elastin as well as DNA and long-term damage. Sun protection should be very much part of a daily skincare routine.

What SPF should I use in the winter?

Use a high-level broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects you from both UVB and UVA rays.  We recommend Ultrasun Face SPF30 or for those spending a lot of time outdoors, in snowy conditions or at high altitudes, choose Ultrasun Face SPF50+.

Should apply a separate moisturiser in addition to Ultrasun Face formulas?

Whilst Ultrasun formulas work beautifully with other skincare, our face products can be used as all-in-one moisturisers. Each face formulation has the added benefits of clinically proven, premium skin care actives that are carefully selected to target specific concerns.  For example, Ection is known as the anti-stress molecule that increases hydration levels for up to 7 days after application whilst calming skin sensitivities.

Do I need a separate SPF if my make-up or moisturiser contains SPF?

Many moisturisers and make up formulas contain sunscreen within them. However, by the very nature of their intended use, these are applied far more thinly and therefore not providing the same high-level SPF protection as a dedicated sunscreen.  It’s also less likely these formulas contain adequate if any UVA protection.  Ultrasun Face Tinted formulas are the ultimate all-in-one that can be used as your daily moisturiser and make-up base whilst delivering high-level broad-spectrum protection.

My skin gets dry during the Winter months, which formula do you recommend?

Harsh, cold conditions can dehydrate your skin and cause irritation.  We recommend our Ultrasun Face Fluid Anti-Pollution SPF50+ which has a higher concentrate of hydrating ECTOIN keep your skin hydrated and defended from the elements.

My hands feel dry during the cold weather, what can I use?

Hands are often the first to feel the effects of winter, with fewer sebaceous glands they are more prone to feeling dry in cold weather combined with the dehydrating effect of central heating. Ultrasun’s Anti-Pigmentation Hand SPF25 protects hands from the chill with ceramides to protect the skin barrier & niacinamide to prevent & treat age spots.

Is it necessary to protect my lips from the sun in the winter?

Absolutely. Just as our lips can get sunburned, the cold, dry winter air can lead to chapped lips. Our Ultrasun Lip Protection SPF30 and SPF50 are Infused with Blackcurrant Seed Oil, rich in Omega 3 & 6 for intense moisturisation. This nourishing balm protects and soothes dry and delicate skin whatever the weather.

What SPF formulas do you recommend for a winter Ski break?

It’s important to wear SPF when skiing as the combination of high altitude and reflection from the snow and ice can increase your risk of UV damage and sunburn.  We recommend Ultrasun Extreme SPF50+ designed to withstand extreme conditions and gives long lasting protection for even the most sensitive skin including babies. Protect the delicate eye area with Ultrasun Eye Protection SPF30 and don’t forget to pack your Ultrasun Lip Protection SPF50.

Can I use the sunscreen I bought in the Summer?

You can use your summer sunscreen in the winter, but it's essential to check expiry dates.  Most Ultrasun products have an unusually high 2-year shelf life.  Check individual products for specific guidance, look for the PAO symbol which can be found on all packaging.

Remember that using sunscreen is a year-round skincare essential to protect your skin from the sun's harmful effects and maintain its health and appearance.
